In the next few weeks we will be launching a campaign to raise money for "Community Health Clubs" in Malawi! A CHC, is a model of learning that uses participatory methods for learning and lifestyle change. Simply put members attend their club each week and learn about a key subject for six months to one year. This CHC will be meeting to learn about water, sanitation, and hygiene each week.
They will learn about many things including germ theory, causes of diarrhea, skin diseases, hand washing, latrines, and many other simple and life changing concepts. They learn through drawings, dancing, song, and group feed back. They also have practical implementations to do. All in all it is an exceptional tool and changes lives dramatically.
Just for some context the village of Chilombo, has less than 3% of the population know how to treat diarrhea properly. Yet it is frequent, and even deadly. In nearby Mgwayi, 89% reported not using a hand washing station after going to the toilet. Changing this behavior alone would radically improve health, school attendance, and decrease infant mortality.
