Six little piggies...

To get to Mgwayi village, you walk along a dusty one person trail through high grass to the sound of crickets...if you are lucky you will be joined by some smiling children...maybe you will meet some women carrying water from the solitary well or doing laundry in the river.  The homes are mud built and straw roofed...many will have maize drying in the mid-day sun on the roof. Outside some homes maize will be laid out for grinding into flour.  This sleepy village, however,  is a strong hold of poverty, women have little to no education, children are happy but dressed in rags, many of them are orphans... but in one building some new life is bringing an an extra portion of hope.

The Khalamathu Project, is the reason for this.  This project is giving women in Mgwayi skills training in business management and pig rearing.  This allows them to generate income to provide for themselves as well as empowers and educates them.  It is truly a wonderful project, especially when we consider the women are all widows, who have been left at the bottom of the ladder with no money and no education. But now they have the skills to start to move up and out of poverty.  They have show much determination and desire to succeed from the outset, even providing building materials and labour for the outhouses...they have grabbed this opportunity with both hands.
This month they had their first successful births of six little piglets!  This is fantastic news as they have had to overcome some adversities, getting to this stage...great work ladies we are proud of you!
