WASH

"wash your hands before dinner"..."yes, mum"..."did you wash your hands"..."yes...mum"...

A normal mother to child conversation right...but what if you do not have soap? or do not understand how germs/bacteria are spread? what if you use a dirty bucket to drink from? what if you have no toilet...no sink, no running water? what if you do not even know about hand washing?

In a partnership with the University of Texas and Children of the Nations we are aiming to increase education on the topics of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. The program is better known as WASH, which is utilized by many organizations including USAID. This program will create Community Health Clubs (CHC), where there will be ongoing group learning, practical application and increased sense of awareness.  The clubs will meet for the better part of a year, and will be trained by their peers in the community.

We will be running the CHC's in all five communities within our ministry in the Dominican Republic, the amount of transformation that we are expecting will be significant.  This program uses a curriculum that has been designed through community consultation and will be delivered in Spanish and Creole (if needed).  Once a CHC is complete, the group invariably has formed a good bond and will be set up for a greater community impact in many other areas not just water, sanitation and hygiene.

We are expecting that this program will light a fire in the hearts and minds of the communities and hugely improve their perceptions of themselves and also reduce the amount of water borne disease affecting their children.
