In Christianity Today, economists from Cornell, Duke, Yale, University of Maryland, UC-Berkley, Stanford, George Washington, UC-Santa Cruz, University of Minnesota, Brandeis, Michigan State, Tufts and the World Bank were asked to rank the top 10 strategies to help the poor.
This is how they ranked the top 10 -
1-Clean Water to Rural Villages
2-Fund de-worming for children
3-Provide Mosquito nets
4-Sponsor a child
5-Give wood burning stoves
6-Give a microfinance loan
7-Fund reparative surgeries
8-Donate farm animal
9-Drink fair trade coffee
10-Give a kid a lap top
I find it very reassuring that at Children of the Nations, we use SEVEN of these strategies! And even more assuring is that water scores number one, and microfinance number six along with farm animal at number eight - I work on all three of these! This past year I have also worked to get mosquito nets to the Malawian village of Chilombo... It is nice when people from such world renowned institutions say that what you are doing is bang on track!
To hammer home the point - 90% of all disease is caused by poor hygiene and inadequate sanitation as well as dirty water. Guess what we just did in the Dominican Rep? - built a clean water facility and started a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene partnership with the University of Texas Health and Science Center.
Yes what I do is very very important and that is what economists from 13 different world class institutions say - not just me.
