This well cost $5,000 and it will serve hundreds of people every day. Looking at the big picture, securing clean water for a village for $5,000 is not that much...if only 100 people live here that is only $50/person... FOR EVER.
Lacking clean water is a basic need that is typical of many of the communities where we work. In Altagracia, families watch as over filled and poorly constructed latrines over flow into their homes during Hurricane Season, in Sierra Leone children bathe in rivers infested with E.coli...basic needs like clean water and adequate sanitation are not accessible to many. In all of our countries open defecation is not unusual, when there is no latrine there really is no other choice...coupled with limited access to soap there is a high rate of infection form viruses and bacterias.
Pictures like this one taken in Chilombo, Malawi are also common scenes. An open, shallow and uncovered well, with no protection from falling debris, mosquito larvae or wondering livestock...well water being drawn in dirty buckets and carried home over long distances.
Remember a well can be drilled for as little as $5,000...think about it...what a great investment in the future of hundreds of people if not thousands.
